Biden’s $25B Rental Relief Package: How to Get Rental Relief

Today President Biden proposed a new $25B Rental Relief package that will allow tenants and landlords to apply for money for rental relief to pay both past and future rents. This is in addition to the $25B Rental Relief Bill package that President Trump signed into law last month with the payments to individuals for emergency rental assistance as well as airlines and other entities.

There are some restrictions on this rental assistance program that weren’t in the last one. They include income limits, the tenant must be employed, and also stopping tenant evictions until March 31st of 2021. The most interesting part is that the rental relief in Biden’s package is that it is being sent to cities with populations of over 200,000 people so that it can be distributed more quickly, although those cities can spend the money however they see fit within the guidelines.

The provisions of the bill are that the assistance money will be given to the states and cities and then the states will disburse the money. A provision is that the landlords will be able to apply on behalf of the tenant to get the rent paid as well. The rental relief assistance package money can also be used to pay for utilities as well as back rent or rent owed in arrears.

Details of the rental relief package and other elements of the bill and how to get rental relief:
-Income less than $99k to qualify
-$25B to states and cities to administer rental assistance
-Can be used to pay back rents
-Can be used to pay utilities
-Landlords can apply on behalf of tenants
-Eviction moratorium to the end of March 2021
