Investor Buying RISING: Are Owner Occupants Being Left Behind in Real Estate?

Investors made up 18% of all home purchases in 2022 and 2023 to date, while historically they were as low as 6% of all home purchases. The rise of hedge funds and wall street institutional investors buying houses has led to the number of homes available for owner occupants to purchase declining rapidly. In some markets over 30% of all home purchases were by investors.

Housing has generally been regarded as a great hedge against inflation and many Americans have taken advantage of this by building wealth though home ownership. Even just one rental property can greatly boost a person’d net worth to as much as 35 times the average net worth that people who are renters have.

Investor buying of homes is likely to increase even more as mortgage interest rates are pricing home owners out of the real estate market.
